A swarm of bees descended on Angel Stadium and caused a 23-minute delay as both teams were briefly pulled off the field.
“I heard people yelling at me, telling me there were a lot of bees behind me,” Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez told MLB.com. “But I didn’t pay attention. As soon as I looked back I was, ‘Oh my God. That’s a lot.’ That was crazy today. That was something different. … I was hoping Felix would get the [final] out. That was scary right there.”
With two on and two out in the third, Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez stepped off the mound as he noticed a commotion in the outfield. The grounds crew at Angel Stadium was assisted by a few volunteers from the crowd in containing the swarm, according to The Associated Press.
