Scientists have been able to positively confirm that the Culex mosquito is not able to transmit the Zika virus to humans. At this point the two primary culprits are the Aedes aegypti mosquito and the Asian tiger mosquito. After studying the Culex mosquito, scientists found that rather than multiply, the Zika virus simply disappears in the species.
Ruling out the culex mosquito as a possible transmitted may not seem like a huge discovery, but it is actually incredibly important to our ability to properly fight the spread of the Zika virus. This means we are no longer wasting time and precious resources targeting a mosquito that isn’t even a threat. Control strategies can now be better targeted at the mosquitos doing the actual damage. It is important to know which mosquitos are an actual threat to us.
You can discern between the different species by their coloring, as well as their habits. While the Aedes aegypti mosquito is black and the Asian tiger mosquito is black and white, the Culex mosquito is brown in color. Another important difference to note is that the Culex mosquito lives outside, while the other two species can live either inside or outside your home in gutters, spare containers of water, and even in plant trays. Experts are advising people to eliminate any small pools of water where mosquitos can breed and to wear insect repellent at all times for protection.
