There are a lot of bodybuilders out there that would not like the idea of giving up their whey protein in favor of bug protein. For years whey protein has been the gold standard among post workout recovery shakes. However, there exist many good reasons to switch to an insect protein, as experts believe that insect based protein powders are nutritionally superior to whey protein.
Currently whey protein is the only type of protein shake that contains the entire amino acid profile. Whey protein contains all nine of the essential amino acids that we need, but so do insects, such as crickets and grasshoppers. Also, insects are a good source of vitamin B12, which can only be found in animals. The calcium levels in insects are also through to roof. Experts believe that insects are particularly nutritious for humans because we consume the entire insect, even the exoskeleton, which is high in calcium. We do not, however, consume cow and chicken bones for the extra nutrients. Currently no company has come forward with an insect-protein powder product due to the current lack of public interest in this powder as well as a lack of research.
